Expression lines: dynamic, static, and what changes
A line that only shows when you move and a line etched at rest call for different treatments. How to tell which one you have, and why the order of treatment matters.
Expression lines come with a ten-second test that determines which treatment will work in your case, and it takes nothing more than a mirror.
Relax your face completely and look. Is the line that bothers you still there?
- If it disappeared, it is dynamic.
- If it is still visible, it is static.
- If it got shallower but did not go away, it is somewhere in between — the most common stage.
That classification defines everything that follows.
The three types of expression lines
Dynamic wrinkles
They appear only during movement. They are the direct result of muscle contraction folding the skin above it.
They sit where we express the most: forehead, glabella, around the eyes, around the mouth.
Treatment: botulinum toxin, which reduces the force of the contraction. This is the indication where it works best, and where it delivers the most predictable result.
Static wrinkles
Visible with the face at rest. They started out dynamic — years of repeated folding, combined with collagen loss and sun damage, turned the crease into a permanent mark in the skin.
Treatment: it does not respond well to toxin alone, because the problem is no longer in the movement. It calls for approaches that act on the skin and on the structure: collagen stimulation, technologies, and, in deep folds, volume replacement.
Gravitational wrinkles
They come from neither movement nor folding: they come from tissue descending. They are the folds that form where the ligament has loosened and volume has dropped.
Treatment: neither toxin nor skin treatment. The approach is structural — restore support or, at an advanced stage, surgery.
Mistaking a gravitational line for a static one is a common error, and it leads to skin treatments that deliver nothing.
Why the order matters
The most useful thing about this classification is preventive: a dynamic wrinkle that gets treated does not turn static at the same rate.
The permanent mark forms through repeated folding. Reducing the force of the contraction while the line is still dynamic interrupts the process that would make it permanent.
That is why toxin has a reasonable role in someone who already has marked dynamic lines — not out of premature vanity, but because treating a line after it has set is harder and the result is partial.
The reverse holds too: starting after the wrinkle is static means the treatment becomes containment and softening, not prevention.
Can expression lines be reversed?
It depends which of the three.
Dynamic: yes, for as long as the treatment lasts. The line disappears at rest and reduces considerably in movement.
Mild static: partial, gradual improvement. With the folding interrupted, the skin has a chance to recover part of its structure, and the result shows up over months, not weeks.
Deep static: it softens, it does not disappear. Anyone promising to erase it is promising what no technique delivers.
Gravitational: this is not a case of reversing a wrinkle; it is a case of repositioning or replacing structure.
What to do to treat expression lines
In order of impact on the cause:
- Daily sun protection. Ultraviolet damage is the main external factor in turning dynamic into static. Without it, everything else works against the current.
- Botulinum toxin, for the dynamic ones and to hold back the progression.
- Topical retinoids, used consistently over months, for skin quality.
- Collagen stimulation — biostimulators and technologies — for the static ones.
- Volume replacement, when there is a structural loss component.
- Not smoking and sleeping enough, which are not generic advice here: both have a direct effect on collagen and repair.
When we advise against it
- Toxin as the sole treatment for a deep static wrinkle. It will not erase it, and raising the dose to try produces a motionless face with the mark still there.
- Skin treatment for a gravitational wrinkle. The cause is structural; no active ingredient reaches it.
- Toxin in someone with no marked dynamic lines. It does not prevent what has not started.
- When the expectation is complete elimination. With static lines, the honest goal is softening.
- Before daily sun protection is established. It is the foundation, and on this subject it is not negotiable.
Where each type tends to appear
The map helps you recognise what you have before looking for treatment.
Upper third — forehead, glabella and crow's feet are dynamic wrinkle territory, because the musculature there is the most active in the face. It is where toxin works best and where prevention has the most effect.
Middle third — the marks here tend to be mixed. The nasolabial fold, for example, has a strong gravitational component, and for that reason does not respond to toxin.
Lower third — marionette lines and the vertical lines around the mouth combine movement, volume loss and skin damage. It is the region where an isolated treatment disappoints most, and where a combined plan pays off most.
Frequently asked questions
What are the three types of wrinkles?
Dynamic (they appear with movement), static (visible at rest) and gravitational (folds caused by tissue descending). Each responds to a different treatment.
Do dynamic wrinkles go away on their own?
They go away at rest, yes — that is what defines them. But repeated folding over the years turns them static.
At what age do static wrinkles appear?
It varies a great deal, and depends more on sun exposure, smoking and genetics than on age. They can show up at thirty in fair skin with heavy exposure, and much later in someone who has protected themselves.
Which vitamin removes wrinkles?
No vitamin on its own. Vitamin C takes part in collagen synthesis, and vitamin A, in the form of topical retinoids, has the best evidence among active ingredients — but neither of them "removes" a wrinkle.
Does cream fix expression lines?
It improves skin quality and the appearance of fine lines. It does not act on muscle contraction, which is the origin of a dynamic wrinkle.
