Facial laser: what it treats and what it doesn't
Laser is not one procedure — it is a set of device families with different targets. What each type treats, the real downtime, and when the right answer is something else.
"Facial laser" is not a procedure. It is a large family of devices that do quite different things, and comparing prices between them without knowing which is which makes no sense.
What they all share is the principle: they emit light at a specific wavelength, absorbed by a specific target in the skin — melanin, haemoglobin or water. The target chosen determines what that laser treats.
The facial laser families and their targets
Target: melanin
These treat dark spots and pigmentation — melasma, sun spots, freckles. The light is absorbed by the pigment, which fragments and is cleared by the body.
They call for caution in more pigmented skin, because of the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Melasma in particular is a difficult, recurring condition to manage, and the wrong laser makes it worse.
Target: haemoglobin
These treat vessels and redness — telangiectasias, rosacea, vascular marks. The light is absorbed by the blood inside the vessel, which coagulates and is reabsorbed.
Target: water (ablative and fractional lasers)
These treat texture, scars and wrinkles. The water in the skin absorbs the energy, producing controlled micro-injuries that trigger a repair process with collagen production.
This is the family with the greatest potential result and the most downtime.
Ablative and non-ablative: the difference that sets the downtime
Ablative removes layers of skin. A more pronounced result on texture, scarring and wrinkles, with a recovery that involves days to weeks of red, peeling skin and demands strict care.
Non-ablative heats the deeper layers while preserving the surface. Fast recovery — redness for hours or a few days — a more discreet result, and the need for more sessions.
Fractional treats the skin in microscopic columns, leaving intact tissue between them. It exists in ablative and non-ablative versions, and it is the strategy that seeks a balance between result and recovery.
Choosing between them is not about which is better: it is about how much recovery time the person can afford and what the target of the treatment is.
What facial laser does not treat
Worth being explicit, because this is where expectations usually go astray:
- Volume loss. Laser works on the skin. A face that has lost bone and fat support does not improve with laser, however good the device.
- Dynamic wrinkles. Their origin is muscular. The laser's target is skin.
- Moderate to advanced sagging. There is some firming effect, insufficient for tissue that has descended.
- Deep folds and structural shadows. These are questions of volume and support.
A face can have flawless skin and still look tired, if what changed is the structure underneath it.
Can someone with rosacea have laser?
Yes, and in many cases it is precisely the indication — as long as it is the right laser. Devices targeting haemoglobin treat the redness and vessels of rosacea, with good results.
What should not be done is to expose skin with active rosacea to lasers from another family without a specific indication, because misdirected heat can trigger a flare.
The same principle holds for melasma and for higher skin phototypes: the wrong device is not merely ineffective, it is potentially harmful. Assessment beforehand matters more here than in almost any other aesthetic procedure.
Facial laser recovery: what to expect
It varies enormously with the device:
- Light non-ablative: redness for hours, normal routine the same day.
- Non-ablative fractional: redness and roughness for two to four days.
- Ablative fractional: intense redness, swelling and peeling for several days to weeks.
In every case, strict sun protection during recovery is not a recommendation, it is a requirement — treated skin exposed to the sun develops hyperpigmentation easily.
When we advise against it
- When the complaint is volume or sagging. Laser is a skin treatment. Referring to the right procedure beats selling what is on hand.
- Without defining the target. Spots, vessels and texture call for different devices. "Getting a laser" with no diagnosis means choosing by what the clinic happens to own.
- On tanned skin or skin with recent sun exposure, because of the risk of burns and hyperpigmentation.
- Without skin preparation, when the case requires it. In pigmentation, prior preparation reduces the risk of making things worse.
- When the downtime does not fit the person's life at that moment. An ablative laser three weeks before an event is a bad decision, not an acceptable risk.
- On skin with an active infection, or a history of cold sores without prophylaxis.
Facial laser or injectable: how to decide
The question resolves itself once you identify which layer the problem is in.
If what bothers you is on the surface — a spot, a vessel, texture, a scar, a pore — the target is skin, and technology is the answer.
If what bothers you is the shape — a fold, a lost contour, a hollow area, an expression line — the target is volume or muscle, and no skin technology solves it.
Plenty of people have both, and then both belong in the plan, at separate times: a skin procedure and an injectable in the same week is usually a bad idea because of the combined swelling.
