How to get rid of a double chin: what doesn't work, and why

Exercises, chin straps, creams, teas, massage, detox diets. What each promise actually does for a double chin, what it doesn't, and what's left once you rule all of it out.

Search "how to get rid of a double chin" and you'll get, in order: neck exercises, chin straps, firming cream, tea, ice massage, a collagen-rich diet. Six promises, five of them free or close to it, all presented as if they worked.

I understand the appeal. Nobody wakes up wanting to book an appointment. But trying the whole list rarely costs nothing: it's months of discipline with no change in the mirror, and the wrong conclusion at the end — "nothing can be done in my case".

Something can be done. But it starts with ruling out what doesn't do the job. That's what this article does.

One note first: here I cover what does not work. The causes of a double chin, and why each one calls for something different, are in the article on what forms a double chin — worth reading alongside this one, because half the reason these promises fail is explained there.

Why almost everything sold for a double chin fails

Exercises, straps, creams and teas share one underlying problem. They all act on things that are almost never what forms the double chin.

Exercise acts on muscle. A strap acts through temporary compression. Cream acts on the surface of the skin. Tea and diets act on body weight as a whole.

A double chin, meanwhile, is formed by localized fat in the submental area, by skin that has lost support, and by the bone structure underneath — how much chin you have, how much jawline. Nothing on the first list reaches the second, with the partial exception of weight.

Keep that logic in mind. It explains every item below without my having to repeat the argument each time.

Do double chin exercises work?

They work for what exercise does: working muscle. The platysma and the front neck muscles gain tone, posture improves a little, and with very mild laxity that can make a subtle difference.

Now what it doesn't do. Spot reduction doesn't exist — contracting a muscle in one area doesn't mobilize the fat sitting over it. If it did, chewing would fix full cheeks. And no exercise projects the chin, because the chin is bone.

The moves that circulate online — "kissing the ceiling", jutting the jaw forward, rolling the head — have no evidence of reducing submental fat. Some of them, done forcefully and for a long time, make the platysmal bands more visible, which is the opposite of what the person was after.

Is it worth continuing? If you do it for posture and well-being, yes. If it's your double chin strategy, you're investing time in the wrong tissue.

Do chin straps work?

A strap compresses. While it's on, the tissues are flattened and the contour looks better. Take it off, and within minutes everything is back.

Compression doesn't eliminate fat and doesn't permanently shorten skin. What it can do, worn tight for long periods, is interfere with local drainage and leave marks. As a short-term post-surgical aid, under the surgeon's guidance, it has a role. As a daily treatment bought at the pharmacy, it's a placebo with an elastic band.

Do creams, serums and "firming" products work?

A cream works on the epidermis and, in good formulations, a little below it. Submental fat sits much deeper, and the structure that supports the lower third of the face sits deeper still.

Actives like retinoids improve skin texture and quality, and that counts — better skin reflects light better and the contour reads a bit cleaner. But improving the surface of an area doesn't change the volume underneath it. No topical product sold in Brazil is registered with Anvisa, the Brazilian health regulator, for localized fat reduction, and the reason is simple: that's not what they do.

When a label says "lifting effect", read it as a film on the skin that lasts as long as the product is there.

Tea, detox diets and "fat-burning foods"

No food burns fat from a specific area. Draining teas act on fluid retention, which changes the day's puffiness — real, visible, and unrelated to what forms a double chin.

What diet really does is move total body weight, and there it does affect the fat component. But weight loss is an imprecise lever: you don't choose where your body takes it from. And when weight drops a lot and the skin doesn't retract with it, the laxity that was being masked shows up.

Oral hydrolyzed collagen has a literature on skin, and that's a legitimate discussion. It has no literature on rebuilding the contour of the neck.

How Koreans "get rid of" a double chin

This question comes up a lot, and the honest answer is disappointing: with procedures, makeup, camera angles and editing.

Korean aesthetics earned its reputation by working on the lower third — chin projection, jawline definition, skin technology. It's the same toolkit available anywhere. What circulates on social media as the "Korean method" — gua sha massage, taping, tongue exercises — is a care routine, not double chin treatment.

Gua sha and manual drainage move fluid. The difference is visible and lasts hours.

Does a double chin go away on its own?

In two situations, yes, partly.

A double chin that appeared with recent weight gain tends to shrink when the weight comes off. And a teenager's double chin can change in appearance as jaw growth finishes, because the chin is still projecting.

Outside of that, the trend runs the other way. Collagen declines with age, the ligaments supporting the lower third loosen, and an area that was already borderline closes up further. Waiting is not a neutral strategy.

Can you get rid of a double chin in 7 days?

You can reduce swelling in seven days. Less salt, less alcohol, more sleep, drainage — the area responds to that, and the result is real in Friday's photo.

What doesn't change in seven days: localized fat, collagen quality, chin projection. When content promises a double chin fixed in a week, it's selling you the swing in fluid retention you'd have had anyway.

Short timelines and structural results don't go together. New collagen takes weeks to organize, and that's the part with no shortcut.

Can you get rid of a double chin without surgery?

In mild and moderate cases, yes — and that's exactly where the conversation gets useful, because what's left after ruling out straps, creams and teas is a small, specific set.

At RUV, a mild double chin is treated on two fronts that usually work together:

There are also injectables for submental fat — the route the FDA approved in 2015 with deoxycholic acid. It's a category with a narrow indication and side effects that need to be discussed case by case, and in Brazil what counts is what's registered with Anvisa for that purpose. If someone offers a "double chin enzyme" without mentioning registration and without examining your profile, that's the moment to leave.

And there's a point where none of this delivers what the person wants. When the case is surgical, we refer to a partner surgeon — said at the assessment, not after three sessions that changed nothing. Sometimes the best procedure is the one we don't do.

How much it costs to get rid of a double chin

We don't list prices on the site, and that isn't evasion: the number only exists once we know what's forming your double chin.

What drives the cost, honestly: how many fronts the case calls for (technology only, projection only, or both), how many sessions, how much product, and whether imaging is part of the process. A case with an under-projected chin and good skin doesn't get the same plan as a case with fat and laxity together. Quoting over the phone, before looking at your profile, is guessing.

Be wary of a fixed price advertised before the assessment. Either the plan is standardized — which is bad — or the price will change later.

Lump under the chin: when to stop everything

A point almost no aesthetics content covers, and the most important one on this page.

An aesthetic double chin is stable. It follows weight and age, and changes slowly. Get a medical evaluation before any aesthetic procedure if you have:

Lymph nodes, salivary glands and the thyroid all sit in that area. Each has a set of conditions that presents exactly as "a double chin that appeared". That's a case for a doctor and for tests, not for an aesthetics room.

On a question that comes up often — can someone with a thyroid nodule have a procedure on their double chin? — the answer depends on the nodule, and the person to answer it is the endocrinologist following the case. What we don't do is treat the area from the outside before the investigation on the inside is complete.

When we advise against it

At the assessment, the whole face is analyzed before the complaint is treated. The double chin points to the symptom; the plan starts from the structure — and sometimes the structure says the problem is the chin, not the double chin.

Safety

The submental area and the jawline have significant vascular pathways, and the chin is an area where vascular complications have been documented.

That's why Doppler ultrasound assessment is part of the process here: before, to understand the structure of that face — including filler from previous treatments, which changes the plan — and after, to confirm there is no vessel compression. It's what turns "it's safe" from a promise into a verification.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get rid of a double chin at home?

You can reduce swelling and improve posture and skin quality. Localized fat, established laxity and lack of chin projection don't respond to anything done at home.

Do chin straps work?

They work while they're on your face. Compression doesn't eliminate fat or permanently shorten skin, and wearing one tight for long periods can leave marks.

Do neck exercises get rid of a double chin?

They improve muscle tone and posture. They don't mobilize localized fat and don't project the chin. Spot reduction doesn't exist.

Do massage and gua sha help?

They help with fluid retention, and the effect lasts hours. Good for photo day, irrelevant for the permanent contour.

How do you get rid of neck fat under the chin without surgery?

In mild cases, with technology that acts on collagen and fat, and with chin and jawline projection when the structure calls for it. The first step is working out the balance between the causes, by looking at the profile.

How long does it take for a double chin to go?

The projection front shows change right away, with the initial swelling settling over the first few days. The collagen front works over weeks, because it depends on what your body has yet to produce.

I have a lump under my chin. Is it a double chin?

A double chin is diffuse, stable volume. A palpable, painful or fast-appearing lump calls for medical evaluation before anything else.

Will losing weight fix it?

It fixes the part that's fat. If there was laxity or an under-projected chin underneath, what's left becomes more noticeable after weight loss, not less.
