Plasma IQ: what it's used for, how it works and where it stops
Plasma IQ treats the surface of the skin: mild excess skin on the eyelid, fine lines, texture. How it works, what responds to it, and when it is not the right tool.
Nearly everything written about Plasma IQ sells the device the same way: "eyelids without surgery", quick recovery, portable technology. Some of that is true. What nobody tells you is where it stops.
Plasma IQ works on the surface of the skin. That is where it is genuinely good, and it is also where it ends. People who understand this before booking know what to expect. People who don't tend to ask it for a result that only surgery, or a different technology, can deliver.
What Plasma IQ is
Plasma IQ is a Neauvia device that generates plasma, which is ionized gas, the fourth state of matter. In practice it is a pen: the tip comes close to the skin, and between the tip and the surface a micro-discharge forms, a small arc of energy.
That arc heats a tiny spot in the outermost layer of the skin. The treatment is done point by point, in a grid mapped over the area, with intact skin left between one point and the next.
That is what gets sold as "plasma technology". The rest of this article explains what that point of heat triggers, and why it serves some goals and not others.
How Plasma IQ works
Two things happen, on different timelines.
Immediate tightening
The heat makes the skin at that point contract on the spot. Add up hundreds of points across an area and the skin there looks tighter right after the session. That immediate effect is impressive, and that is exactly why it misleads: part of it is contraction and swelling, and it is not yet the result.
Fibroblasts and medium-term skin tightening
The effect that lasts comes later. Each plasma point is a controlled micro-injury, and the skin responds to it the way it responds to any injury: by healing. That healing is driven by the fibroblast, the cell in the dermis that produces collagen and elastin.
Once stimulated, fibroblasts produce new collagen. That collagen organizes itself over the following weeks and gives the skin more firmness and a tightening that outlasts the first day's contraction. It is the same logic as other collagen-stimulating treatments. What sets plasma apart is depth: it acts close to the surface.
Does it touch the skin?
No. The tip stays a very short distance from the skin, and the plasma arc forms in that gap. Nobody is cutting or puncturing the skin with the tip. What reaches the skin is the energy.
What plasma treats
Plasma IQ does well with surface problems and thin skin. The most common uses:

The right-hand column is the one that matters. Every concern in the table has a version plasma resolves and a version it cannot reach, and what separates them is the cause, not the area of the face.
Plasma IQ for eyelids
This is the best-known use, and for good reason. Upper eyelid skin is among the thinnest on the body, and mild excess skin there, that fold starting to rest on the lashes, responds well to surface tightening.
That is why plasma is often marketed as "blepharoplasty without incisions". I think the name is a bad one, because it promises what surgery does. Blepharoplasty removes skin and, when needed, fat, and repositions structures. Plasma tightens skin. When the problem is only a mild amount of skin, plasma solves it. When there are fat pads, significant excess, or a descending brow pulling the eyelid down, it helps little. In that case, insisting on it delays the right conversation.
Plasma IQ or Ultherapy?
This is a common question, because both talk about collagen and laxity. What separates them is depth.
At RUV we use Ultherapy, by Merz, which delivers energy beneath the skin. The shallower transducers stimulate collagen; the deeper ones act on fat. It treats support and contour, things that happen underneath.
Plasma IQ treats the skin itself: texture, fine lines, thin leftover skin. The two do not compete. When laxity has both a structural component and a surface component, they can belong to the same plan, each working on its own layer.
That is why the assessment starts with the whole face, not the complaint. Someone arrives pointing at the eyelid, but sometimes what is weighing on it is a brow that has dropped, and then treating the eyelid skin does little.
What the session is like
Topical anesthetic first, because the heat is uncomfortable. Then point-by-point application over the planned area. In a small area such as the eyelid, it is a short procedure.
Right afterward there are small dark dots, tiny crusts where the plasma acted, and the area swells. The crusts fall off on their own over a few days. Picking them off early is the most common way to turn a well-done treatment into a dark spot.
The "quick recovery" clinics advertise does exist, but it is worth knowing what it looks like: you can work, but the crusts are visible and will need sunscreen and care until they fall off. If you have an event that week, book the session for another date.
How long plasma results last on the face
I won't give an exact timeframe. We have not found solid research supporting a specific number, and be wary of anyone who quotes one without a source.
What can be said with confidence: the result depends on the collagen your body produced, and that collagen forms over weeks, not days. The effect holds for a while, but it does not stop aging. The skin keeps losing collagen after treatment at the same rate as before, just starting from a better point.
Unprotected sun, smoking and each person's genetics shorten or lengthen that time. That is why "how long does it last" varies so much from person to person.
How much a Plasma IQ session costs
We don't publish prices on the site, and I don't think anyone should answer this without seeing the face. What can be explained is what makes up the cost:
- Size and number of areas. Eyelids are one thing; the perioral area plus eyelids is another.
- Number of sessions. Some cases respond to one, others need more, and that is only decided at the assessment.
- Whether plasma is the whole plan or part of it. When it is combined with another approach, the cost is the plan's.
- Who performs it and how they assess. The device is the same at any clinic. What changes is the indication, and a large share of frustrations with plasma come from the wrong indication, not a bad device.
Any price given before someone looks at your skin is the price of a generic area, and it may not be what you need.
The downsides of plasma
Every article lists the benefits. These are the points that weigh against it:
- Visible crusts for a few days. There is no way to hide them completely.
- Risk of pigment changes, especially in darker skin tones and in people exposed to the sun soon afterward. The heat can leave a spot, darker or lighter.
- Limited reach. It treats the surface. Anyone expecting a lifting effect will be disappointed.
- A result that takes time. The first-day effect is not the result, and the real improvement shows up weeks later.
- Discomfort during treatment, managed with topical anesthetic, but present.
None of these rules the treatment out. But they are the kind of thing you need to know before booking, not discover afterward.
Safety
Plasma acts on the surface, so its main risk lives there too: pigment, healing, and care around the eyes. That is why skin phototype, history of dark spots, use of acids and sun exposure are part of the assessment before any session.
When the plan combines plasma with filler or another injectable, Doppler ultrasound assessment comes in as well: beforehand, to understand the structure of that face, including filler material from previous treatments, and afterward, to confirm there is no vessel compression. With that, "it's safe" stops being a promise and becomes something verified.
Does Plasma IQ replace surgery?
No, and selling it that way creates the most common frustration with this treatment. Plasma is an alternative to surgery for people who don't yet need surgery: mild skin, small excess, a surface complaint.
When a case is surgical, we say so at the assessment, not after sessions that changed little. Sometimes the best procedure is the one we don't do.
When we advise against it
- When the excess eyelid skin is large, or there are fat pads. Plasma tightens thin skin and does not remove volume. That is a case for a conversation with a surgeon.
- When the complaint is structural laxity. Tissue that has descended at depth does not respond to a surface treatment.
- When the wrinkle comes from movement. A line caused by muscle contraction calls for a different approach.
- Tanned skin, or sun exposure planned for the following weeks. The risk of dark spots goes up, and it isn't worth it.
- A history of poor healing or post-inflammatory dark spots. It calls for caution and, often, a different choice.
- An undiagnosed skin lesion. A mole, spot or bump that has changed needs a dermatological assessment before any aesthetic treatment.
- Expecting the final result within a week. The skin will still be healing, and the collagen won't even have started to form.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. An elective procedure waits.
