Photoaging: the damage you choose, or don't

Most of the visible aging of the skin comes from the sun, not from age. What UV does in the dermis, what is reversible and what is not — and what actually changes the outcome.

Photoaging explains a split that changes how you look at skin aging: one part is chronological, set by the passage of time, and another is extrinsic, caused by outside factors.

The extrinsic part is dominated by ultraviolet radiation, and industry estimates attribute to it the largest share of the visible aging of the skin.

The implication is direct: most of what people later try to correct with procedures could simply never have happened.

What ultraviolet radiation does to the skin

The damage works on several fronts at once:

It degrades collagen and elastin. Radiation activates enzymes that break down the fibers of the dermal matrix, and the process accumulates over years.

It impairs repair. Beyond destroying, UV interferes with the skin's ability to rebuild what was lost.

It alters pigmentation. It stimulates melanocytes unevenly, producing spots.

It damages vessels. The origin of telangiectasias and diffuse redness.

It causes cellular DNA damage, which is the basis of skin cancer risk — and this alone is the reason that would justify protection, aesthetics aside.

UVA and UVB do different things

UVB penetrates less, acts in the epidermis and is mainly responsible for sunburn. It varies with season and time of day.

UVA goes deeper, reaches the dermis, and is the main agent of photoaging. It is present year-round, at relatively constant intensity, and passes through glass.

That explains something that surprises a lot of people: you can accumulate damage while driving, sitting near a window, or on an overcast day. UVA gives no warning that it is there — it does not burn, it does not bother you.

How to recognize photoaging in practice

It has its own signature, different from chronological aging:

A useful comparison, and a revealing one: look at the skin on the inner side of your arm — almost never exposed — and compare it with the back of your hand. Same person, same age, same genome. The difference is sun.

Photoaging: what is reversible and what is not

Partly reversible: superficial spots, texture, luminosity, fine wrinkles. They respond to retinoids, acids, technologies and time under consistent protection.

Hard to reverse: deep collagen damage, advanced elastosis — that thick, yellowed skin of chronic exposure — and deep wrinkles already set.

Not reversible: the accumulated damage to cellular DNA. That does not undo itself, and it is why protection matters far beyond appearance.

The practical reading: the earlier the exposure stops, the more stays in the first category.

What actually protects

In order of impact:

Worth saying plainly: no aesthetic procedure makes up for the absence of daily sun protection. It is the best ratio of cost, effort and result in all of facial aesthetics, with no competitor.

Why protection pays off more than any procedure

The arithmetic is worth doing, because it is lopsided.

A daily sunscreen costs a fraction of any aesthetic procedure and acts on the cause of most of what gets treated later. A procedure acts on the consequence, once, and has to be repeated.

That does not mean procedures are useless — it means the order matters. Treating the consequence while the cause operates every day is working against a current.

Someone who starts protecting at twenty-five arrives at fifty with a face that needs less intervention. Someone who starts at fifty still gains: the accumulation stops from there on.

Does sunscreen prevent wrinkles?
