Radiofrequency facial: how it's done, in the clinic and at home
A step-by-step look at a radiofrequency facial session, what the heat does to the skin, whether at-home devices work, and when it isn't worth doing.
A radiofrequency facial sounds simple to explain: a handpiece that warms the skin glides over the face for a few minutes, and the skin gets firmer. That simplicity is exactly why it became an off-the-shelf product, with at-home devices promising the clinic result for the price of a dinner out.
The problem is that the simplicity hides the only variable that matters: how much heat reaches the tissue, at what depth, and for how long. Almost everything that separates a session that works from a session that just leaves the face red comes down to that.
This article explains how a session actually goes, what an at-home device can and cannot do, and when radiofrequency is not the answer.
What radiofrequency does to the skin
Radiofrequency is electromagnetic energy. As it passes through tissue, it meets resistance, and that resistance turns into heat. Unlike a laser, which works through light and depends on skin color, radiofrequency works through the electrical conductivity of the tissue, so it reaches the dermis without having to target the surface on the way.
Controlled heat in the dermis does two things:
- It contracts the collagen fibers that already exist. That is the immediate effect, the "tightened" feeling right after the session.
- It signals the body to produce new collagen. That is the effect that matters, and it is slow, because it depends on your skin responding.
The first one fades. The second one is the treatment. Anyone judging the result by how their face looks the next day is looking at the first.
Types of radiofrequency
Devices differ mainly in how the current travels:

There is no best type in absolute terms. There is the type that matches what the skin needs, and that can only be decided by looking at the skin.
How a radiofrequency facial is done, step by step
In a clinic, a typical session follows this sequence:
1. Assessment. Before any device is switched on, someone needs to look at the whole face and answer one question: is what you call sagging actually sagging? Sometimes it is volume loss, sometimes it is structure, sometimes it is something else. Radiofrequency treats skin. If the problem sits beneath it, the session does not reach it.
2. Cleansing. The skin needs to be free of makeup, sunscreen and oil, because all of these interfere with conduction.
3. Conductive medium. A gel or product made for the device is applied, letting the handpiece glide and spreading the energy evenly.
4. Application. The handpiece moves across the area in continuous strokes, never stopping on a single spot. Stopping concentrates the heat, and that is when burns happen.
5. Temperature control. The practitioner monitors how warm the skin gets throughout the session. It feels intensely warm but bearable. Strong pain is not a sign that it is working — it is a sign that it has gone too far.
6. Finishing. The gel is removed, and moisturizer and sunscreen are applied.
The session needs no anesthesia and, without microneedles, requires no time off from normal routine.
What your face looks like after radiofrequency
Right afterward, it is normal for the skin to be red and warm, like after a day of mild sun, and that fades over the following hours. The firmer feeling also shows up immediately, and that is precisely what misleads: it is fiber contraction and a little swelling, not new collagen.
With the fractional, microneedle version, the picture is different: there are visible tiny dots, the skin is more sensitive, and recovery takes a few days.
Blisters, crusting, dark spots or pain that persists are not part of the expected course. If they appear, the person needs to go back to whoever performed the treatment.
What not to do after radiofrequency on the face
- Sun without protection. Heated, sensitized skin pigments more easily.
- Acids, exfoliation and peels in the following days. Adding more aggression to skin that has just been heated is asking for irritation.
- Sauna, very hot showers and intense exercise the same day. More heat on top of heat adds nothing to the result.
- Heavy makeup right afterward, especially with the microneedle version.
Does at-home radiofrequency work?
This is the fastest-growing question, and the honest answer has two parts.
An at-home device uses the same physical principle. But it is designed to be safe in the hands of someone who has never studied skin, and that comes at a price: the energy it delivers is necessarily lower. A device sold for home use cannot be powerful enough to burn someone who uses it wrong, and the margin that protects you is the same margin that limits the result.
In practice, what you can expect from a good at-home device, used consistently, is better glow and texture and a subtle firmness. What you cannot expect is what it lacks the power to do: change contour, treat moderate sagging, lift what has dropped.
My take: an at-home device is skincare. It is not a sagging treatment. People who buy one understanding that difference tend to be satisfied. People who buy one thinking it will replace the clinic are not.
How to use a radiofrequency facial device at home
- Follow the manufacturer's frequency. More sessions do not make up for low power, and they raise the risk of irritation.
- Clean skin and the recommended gel. Without it, the device heats unevenly.
- Continuous movement, always. Never let the handpiece sit still.
- Avoid the area over the eyes, unless the device has a handpiece made for it.
- Stop if it truly burns. Warmth is expected; a strong burning sensation is not.
Which at-home device is best
There is no single one that suits everyone, and be wary of any list that says otherwise, especially when every item has a purchase link. Three criteria matter more than any ranking: registration with Anvisa, Brazil's health regulator (you can check it on the agency's website), temperature control with automatic shut-off, and service and repair support in Brazil. An unregistered imported device is a gamble on something that is going to heat your face.
How long radiofrequency results last on the face
The immediate tightened part lasts days. New collagen, if the skin responds, lasts longer, but not forever. The skin keeps aging after treatment at the same pace as before, which is why radiofrequency is usually planned as a protocol with maintenance, not a one-off procedure.

How much a radiofrequency facial session costs
We don't publish prices, because a number on its own says very little. What makes up the cost:
- The type of device. Simple, multipolar and fractional microneedle radiofrequency have very different equipment and consumable costs.
- Who performs it. The practitioner's training and the time spent on assessment are part of the bill.
- The number of sessions. Radiofrequency is done in a series, and the real cost is the protocol, not the session.
- The area treated. Full face, neck and chest do not take the same time.
Comparing session to session, without knowing how many there will be or with which device, is comparing things that don't compare.
Radiofrequency for fibrosis
Radiofrequency is used after cosmetic surgery to help treat fibrosis, usually by the professionals overseeing surgical recovery. It is a different indication from routine facial aesthetics: there, the goal is to help tissue that healed irregularly reorganize itself.
If you have fibrosis after surgery, the decision about radiofrequency belongs to whoever is managing your post-op care. It is not something to solve with an at-home device.
Radiofrequency and rosacea
Heat is one of the best-known rosacea triggers. A technique that works precisely by heating the skin deserves, at the very least, caution in someone with this condition. Skin with active rosacea calls for a dermatology assessment before any technology that heats the face, and in many cases there is a better route.
Radiofrequency or microfocused ultrasound
The two technologies show up together in the same searches, and it makes sense to look at them side by side: both use heat to stimulate collagen. The difference is where the heat reaches and how it is delivered.

Safety
Radiofrequency that is well indicated and well performed is safe, and problems almost always come from two places: heat too concentrated on one spot, and devices of unknown origin. Burns, blisters and pigmentation are the most commonly reported complications, and both causes are avoidable.
One question few people think about: what is already in your face. Anyone who has had filler, threads or any other procedure needs to say so beforehand, because it changes the plan. - When sagging is moderate or advanced. Radiofrequency has limits, and pushing through sessions for a case it cannot reach is time spent waiting for a result that won't come.
- When the problem is volume or structure, not skin. A face that has lost support is not fixed by heating the surface.
- Active rosacea, inflamed skin, wounds or infection in the area. First the skin calms down, then heat is considered.
- A pacemaker or metal implant in the area, which needs to be assessed before any technology that conducts current.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. An elective procedure waits.
- When the expectation is a surgical result. Radiofrequency improves skin quality. It does not reposition tissue, and saying so up front prevents frustration later.
